Michaelmas: Trust — Two Letters and a Little Envelope

Art Card | 29 September 2026

I’m a little behind with sharing my art cards. In fact, I’ve been rather quiet on here recently, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been making things. Quite the opposite!

This card was created for Michaelmas, on 29 September, just a few days after the autumn equinox and the Harvest Moon.

Michaelmas is traditionally associated with the changing seasons, the end of the harvest and the transition towards the darker months of the year. It felt like a good opportunity to look both backwards and forwards.

For this card, I returned to collage, using botanical imagery to create a little artwork with a tiny handmade envelope attached to the front.

Inside the envelope is a small card bearing a single word: Trust.

I rather like the idea of an artwork containing a little secret, something that needs to be opened and discovered.

Intention: Trust

Trust yourself, your choices and the person you are becoming.

Practice: Two Letters

I’d heard someone talking about writing letters to themselves on a podcast during my drive to school. I can’t remember exactly where I heard it, but the idea stayed with me.

So I decided to write two letters: one to my younger self and another to my older self.

Having turned 50 this summer, it seemed like a particularly interesting exercise. One letter offered reassurance to the person I used to be, while the other looked ahead to the person I might become.

It was a surprisingly thought-provoking experience, and one that I’d recommend trying.

Something New Is Taking Shape

I’ve really enjoyed making these little art cards over the past few months. What began as a series of creative responses to the moon, the seasons and significant moments in the year has gradually become something more.

I’ve realised that it’s not just the finished artwork I enjoy. It’s the process of stopping, noticing, thinking and responding creatively.

And that has sparked an idea.

I’ve been quietly exploring how I might develop these little cards into a larger illustrated project, bringing together my interests in nature, symbolism, storytelling and creative reflection.

It’s still very much a work in progress, and I’m allowing myself time to experiment and see where it leads.

So although the art cards have been a little quieter online, there’s been plenty happening behind the scenes.

I’ll share more soon.
