For the new moon on 17 April I made this card, First Steps.
The shape at the centre is an egg, inspired by Ukrainian pysanky and by the egg motif that has been appearing in the shrine pieces I have been making. An egg feels like the right symbol for this particular moon: something quiet and full of possibility, holding the beginning of something not yet fully visible.
The dark blue around it is the night sky of the new moon. Inside it, the bright yellow egg glows like a small light in the darkness. The colours also echo the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag, which felt right alongside the pysanky inspiration. I decorated it with stars, spirals, suns, a flower and a heart: symbols of life, energy, growth and love.
As Orthodox Easter approaches this weekend, it also feels like a fitting time for an egg: a symbol of hope, renewal and new beginnings.
Over the last few weeks I have spent a lot of time preparing. I have been organising my classroom and my studio, repotting seedlings, making plans, thinking about how I want to live and work, paying attention to my energy and trying to build small, sustainable habits.
This new moon feels like the moment when preparation becomes action.
Not dramatic change. Not a perfect plan. Just the beginning of movement in the right direction.
Plant the seed. Write the list. Take the walk. Begin the project. Drink the water. Clear the space. Trust that small steps, repeated often enough, really do change things.
Intention: To move gently but deliberately towards the life I want, trusting that small actions are enough to begin.
Practice: Choose one small thing that moves you in the direction you want to go. Plant a seed, clear a corner, take a walk, drink a glass of water, write a list or begin the first five minutes. Let the act itself be enough.
