New Moon Art Card — Two Magpies

This art card marks the new moon just before the Spring Equinox — a quiet threshold moment in the turning year.

For this card I created a simple monoprint of two magpies. In folklore, magpies carry meaning and message. One for sorrow, two for joy — and I liked the sense of companionship, balance and watchfulness that two birds bring. They feel like witnesses to the changing season.

This new moon sits right at the end of winter’s long inward pull. It isn’t yet the burst of colour and energy that comes with Ostara. Instead, it offers something gentler: a pause, a listening space, a moment to prepare.

The intention for this moon is:

“I prepare my ground with care. Joy is already on its way.”

This is not about rushing forward or setting grand goals. It is about noticing what needs tending, clearing, organising or quietly putting in place. In the natural world, much of the work of spring begins before anything visible appears above the soil.

A simple new moon practice

Choose one small way to prepare your own ground.

This might be something practical — sorting seeds, tidying a corner of the garden, refreshing a bird feeder, clearing a workspace, or making a list of what needs attention as the season turns.

Move slowly and with intention. Notice sounds, light, textures and signs of life returning. Let the action itself become a moment of awareness rather than a task to complete.

You might like to write down one or two gentle intentions for the coming weeks, or simply acknowledge what is already beginning to shift.

New moons are not always about starting. Sometimes they are about making space for what is already on its way.

As we move towards the Spring Equinox, this card holds that quiet promise — that joy, growth and movement are gathering just out of sight.
