School Visit

Wednesday, 18th, November 2009 · 1 Comment

The phone is ringing, I have a small boy hanging off my leg and a baby girl balanced on my hip.
“hello, It’s Maureen from the school, just checking you are still coming to the induction meeting tomorrow?”

Well I’ll spare you the details, but after a long and complicated conversation we established a letter was sent, but it did not make it to me, explaining Alpha has a place at nursery to start on January 26th every morning and there was a meeting for new parents, could we come childless!!! and bring child’s birth certificate….

They said I could take the children along if I had to, but it would be better if I didn’t… after a few panicked phone calls to mum and MIL (Mum in Law) I established children would have to come with me and that was that…. so after getting up early the following day and making sure everybody didn’t look too scruffy, and then struggle through the pouring rain to school…. (this is tricky as two year olds are magnetically drawn to puddles especially when not wearing wellies) we finally arrive at school.

Birth Certificate forgotten….. Weetabix encrusted on my shoe and in Alpha’s hair….not too bad??

I am not the only parent with children in tow… phew, there are 2 other children, a baby, and a little girl must be about Alpha’s age. so we are offered tea and given some toys to play with while we wait….
3 pushchairs in the room, 2 are pristine with smart changing bags hanging off the back, one looks like it is packed to cross the Sahara and by the state of it probably has at some point it has an interesting selection of crisps, leaves, mud, and possibly vomit ground into it and is dripping and steaming slowly in the corner… guess which one is mine??

So the Head Master does a little intro speech to us all… the other children sit quietly with their mum’s mine do not!

Alpha manage to get wedged under the lady next to mes’ chair, I try and extract him while she gives me a forced smile and I try and look like I am listening to the head master… then the baby starts to copy the head master talking (I think it’s a conspiracy) “Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah” The head master stops talking and looks at her and smiles, she stops shouting Blah and stares at him blankly, he starts talking again and so does she……

After we have been given lots of bits of paper and signed a million things we head off into the class rooms to be shown round, they had hidden the children away in the corner so we can see round, Alpha gets stuck right in, picks up a Djembe (African Drum) and heads over to the corner where the children are quietly sat watching TV, I am talking to one of the teachers and turn round to see them all manically dancing with Alpha at the front of the class playing the drum…… Oh my boy, you are a character and very hard work, but you don’t half give me some funny stories to tell!!

Back to Black Library?

Tuesday, 17th, November 2009 · 6 Comments

Well Iona is getting bigger, my time has nearly run out, and I have to decide if I am going to go back to work? ….. Before I finished to have Iona I worked in Black Library Publishing a publishing company linked to Games Workshop based in Nottingham….. Now I am not a bookish type person, I can hardly even spell… and I think the only novels I have read come under the heading chick lit.. (I am wincing knowing that some of my BLP colleagues will be reading this… sorry, at least I am honest!)

I moved to the team only a few months before finding out I was pregnant, life just works like that some times I find. I had worked as part of Games Workshops buying team previous to that so knew a few of them already..
Somehow I had fallen into a organizing people role, it just sort of happened, then I got better at Excel and setting up systems and I am fairly good at it..but if I am honest Art is where my heart is, I just got distracted by life and needing to have a job, and then in BLP the most amazing team of people….

Now I know I spend a lot of time gushing over things on here, but i could have just handed in my notice at the end of my maternity leave and never looked back, but I can’t, not really because of the job, but because of the people. I have never in my whole life worked with such a fantastic team of people, every single person in that team has a heart of gold and I miss them all terribly and it’s with great sadness that I have decided not to return to work, however me being a glass half full kind of girl, I have look at the positives, I hope I can still drop in from time to time and gatecrash Cheese club and share a cup of tea, and eat some cake…. there is always cake.. and I get to spend more time with my children, I don’t have to spend my life dashing to and from nursery and to and from work, I can focus on Ena Green and I hope that means I get the best of both worlds and they will be just my friends and no longer my colleagues.

While I wasn’t looking

Thursday, 12th, November 2009 · Leave a Comment

Well I have been hunched over a sewing machine for a few days getting ready to open my folksy shop (I’ll stop going on about it now…)

anyway back to whats been happening in my real life, my mummy life, my housewife life….. urgh it sounds depressing like that, but it’s not really. Alpha is always making me laugh, and Iona can move, she kind of drags herself around but she can get about really well, normally making a b-line for something that is going to choke her or Alpha’s shoe which can’t be nice… so we have had to baby proof… I had forgotten about that as noting is safe from Alpha now, he will happily make a precarious tower of things to climb on to get to something cartoon style…

B bear in custody

We are mostly being policemen at the moment as Alpha chose a policeman’s kit from the toy library, B bear has been given a ticket and handcuffed for throwing toys, a bit steep I thought but this is a police state now (I think b bear is innocent, I think there might be some police corruption in action here?)

The other day I was walking back from town as the kids needed winter clothes, and a Primark visit was in order, so little spent, lots bought, I stop at Greggs to get Alpha a pasty to eat on the way home, and he shouts out “Look Mummy a pound shop!” I suddenly realized I had turned into white trash… How did that happen! I guess it just sneaked up on me.

Do I care?

Not really, if I was younger and not as wise I would care about what other people thought of me, and sometimes I get pangs of I wish I was more successful, but what is that? and how do you know when you are there? It’s just a glass half full or empty scenario I think.. and most of the time I am a glass half full kind of person.

I have brought my own home (yes it is actually very very small and doesn’t really fit all my stuff in it)
I have a brilliant relationship (ignore previous post, these were not about LP just men in general, honest)
I have 2 beautiful, happy healthy children (who have nearly driven me to madness)
I have amazing friends and family (no smart comments to go with this one?)
I have done lots of exciting things and had lots of amazing experiences in my life….

I know I am lucky, and if being white trash is what happens then so be it!
